Bessemer is one of Jefferson County's oldest industrial cities, founded in 1887 and built around the steel industry that defined Birmingham's early economy. That history shows in the housing stock: Bessemer has some of the oldest homes in the metro, with neighborhoods like Jonesboro, North Bessemer, and the area around Bessemer City Hall featuring homes built between 1900 and 1940. These properties commonly have original cast-iron drain lines, lead or galvanized supply pipes, and plumbing systems that have been patched and re-patched over a century. Bessemer also has a significant stock of mid-century homes (1950s–1970s) in areas like Greenwood and along Morgan Road that are hitting the age where major system replacements become necessary. The city is served by the Bessemer Water Works, and older neighborhoods can experience pressure variability. We've worked extensively in Bessemer and understand the challenges of older construction in this community.
